Langkawi Airport do you know what to expect?

What to expect at Langkawi Airport

The only airport on Langkawi, the Langkawi International Airport, is also a tourist attraction as it is venue for the biennial Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition.

It is situated at Padang Matsirat and is about half an hour drive from Kuah Town. Flights from the capital of Kuala Lumpur will take about an hour to reach Langkawi. Upon arrival to Langkawi International Airport, passengers will be greeted by a huge billboard which displays loudly “Welcome to Langkawi duty free Island” in malay.

Langkawi Airport Facilities

Langkawi Airport

Serving over 2.5 million passengers a year, the airport is well run and bears no hint of any sloppiness on the part of the management.

Although an international airport, the Langkawi airport is an utilitarian airport having only the requisite airport facilities.

There are only a few shops and restaurants here and the prices are not as pricey as those you find in most international airports. Bearing in mind that the whole island is a duty free island, you are better off doing your duty free shopping outside the airport than at the shops here. The shops here are good for last minute shopping before boarding your flight.

Arrival Hall

As you disembark from your aircraft, you will walk across the asphalt runway to the arrival hall at the airport terminal building.

Once you enter the terminal building, you will be able to head toward the baggage collection area. There are several travel agencies operating at the airport so you will be able to see these counters and car rental counters as you walk towards the baggage collection area.

As a note, if you are thinking of renting a car in Langkawi, it would be wiser for you to rent a vehicle outside the airport or do so beforehand online as the rates at the airport are not that competitive.

In case you are hungry or thirsty upon arrival, there is a Kenny Rogers restaurant and a Starbucks here.

Departure Hall

The Departure Hall is just adjacent to the Arrival Hall.

There is a large duty free shop located here as well as a Skymall. It tends to be crowded during the daytime due to the incoming and outgoing afternoon and evening flights. Most likely, you will be queuing up to check in for your flight.

Transportation from Langkawi Airport

Taxi
To catch a taxi at the Langkawi airport, you have to buy a taxi coupon at the taxi counter at the arrival hall.

Outside the arrival hall, just hand the coupon over to the taxi driver at the sidewalk. Depending on your destination, taxi fares ranges from MYR 24 to MYR 35.

Car
As mentioned earlier, car rentals are available at the airport.

The counter is beside the arrival hall exit. However, as I said before, you can get better rates than at the airport if you book online or ask your travel agent to assist you. Rates at the airport are standard and they are not negotiable whereas outside, you can still bargain for a lower rate.

Bus
There is no public buses available at the airport. You either have to take a taxi or rent a car or motorcycle.

Money
There is a Maybank (One of the local banks of Malaysia) operating at Langkawi airport.

It’s located near Starbucks. The bank offers foreign exchange services. It is open Monday to Thursday from 9.15am to 4.30pm. On Friday, the closing time is at 4pm. The bank also has an ATM machine at the airport if you happen to run low on cash. The ATM machine is located in the arrival hall opposite the “Polo” store.
